Bitcoin: Swiss Spar Supermarkets Now Accept Crypto

Exciting news from Switzerland! SPAR has started accepting Bitcoin payments at their store in Zug, marking another significant step forward for Bitcoin adoption in the country. This smart implementation uses the super-fast Lightning Network, powered by DFX Swiss’s OpenCryptoPay solution, making instant payments a breeze right at the checkout.
Zug, often called “Crypto Valley,” is the perfect location for this. It really reflects Switzerland’s open and welcoming attitude towards new technologies. The country has become a real global leader in embracing Bitcoin, with cities like Zug and Lugano leading the way in making Bitcoin a part of everyday transactions.
Lugano, in particular, has been making waves with its ambitious “Plan ₿” initiative, which aims to make Bitcoin essentially legal tender in the city. This plan, championed by Mayor Michele Foletti, is already making a difference. You can now use Bitcoin to pay for things like taxes, public services, and at hundreds of local businesses. Lugano is even working with Tether to build a technology education center and startup fund.
DFX Swiss announced with enthusiasm, “This SPAR location is among the first supermarkets in Switzerland to offer Bitcoin payments directly at the checkout using LNURL!” This move could pave the way for wider adoption throughout SPAR’s extensive network of over 13,900 stores in 48 countries, serving a massive 14.7 million customers every day.
Rahim Taghizadegan, director at Bitcoin Association Switzerland, demonstrated just how simple the system is: “Just scan a static QR code, send your sats, and it’s instantly and easily registered by the cashier.” This focus on user-friendliness perfectly matches Switzerland’s vision of making Bitcoin transactions accessible to everyone.
Switzerland’s friendly stance on Bitcoin has attracted a ton of Bitcoin and crypto companies and projects to the country. Beyond just Zug and Lugano, other Swiss cities are also exploring similar initiatives, all supported by a strong and increasingly crypto-friendly banking sector.
SPAR’s initiative is a natural step forward, joining other Swiss retailers who are already accepting Bitcoin payments. This move could really encourage broader adoption across the retail industry, especially with Switzerland setting an example for smoothly integrating Bitcoin into traditional finance and commerce.
