Brawl erupts over Milei’s LIBRA impeachment

Things got heated in Argentina’s parliament as politicians descended into a physical altercation during a session addressing President Javier Milei’s LIBRA scandal. The chaotic scene unfolded just as lawmakers were about to vote on whether to impeach him, ultimately leading to an abrupt end to the proceedings.
According to reports from local news outlets, the brawl ignited between Lisandro Almirón, representing the ruling La Libertad party, and Oscar Zago, from the Integration and Development Movement.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that Almirón sparked the conflict by verbally attacking Zago, branding him a “traitor.” The situation quickly escalated, with Zago allegedly resorting to punches. Adding to the turmoil, Deputy Rocío Bonacci (from the UNITE party) reportedly threw a glass of water at Lilia Lemoin (of La Libertad) amidst the general pressure being applied to members to vacate their seats.
In the wake of Wednesday’s tumultuous session, opposition leader Maximiliano Ferraro has called for a full investigation into what he describes as a breakdown of order. Ferraro alleges that members of the La Libertad party engaged in tactics of “coercion” and “intimidation” to force colleagues to leave, thereby intentionally disrupting the quorum of the parliamentary session.

The Buenos Aires Herald further reports that the session’s agenda was focused on debating several key aspects of Milei’s LIBRA scandal. This included proposals to establish an investigative commission into the affair and to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president.
Just moments before the outburst of violence, the parliamentary session was on the verge of voting on formalizing the mandate for an impeachment commission to commence its work. However, the sudden altercation brought everything to a halt, prompting House Speaker Martín Menem to declare the session adjourned.
Even prior to this parliamentary chaos, prosecutors had already launched an investigation into Milei and his associates, notably LIBRA co-creator Hayden Davis, following a lawsuit filed last February. Adding to the legal pressure, attorneys have also petitioned the courts to issue an Interpol red notice for Hayden Davis, a move that could pave the way for his arrest and subsequent extradition.
